Hi there, I’m Monica Walmsley,
I’ve worked in the Recruitment industry since 2005, specialising in professional services. My journey has taken me from Dublin to Canberra and finally to Newcastle. Over the years, I’ve held diverse roles, from Manager at a large multinational firm to Director at a boutique agency, and co-founder of my own recruitment agency. This extensive experience in professional services recruitment has given me an intimate understanding of the intricacies of these industries.
Throughout my career, I’ve recognised the critical importance of personal branding. From the early days, I eagerly attended networking events, advertised in newspapers, and leveraged every opportunity to establish my name in these fields. I was also an early adaptor to LinkedIn, realising its potential to build personal branding and foster a robust network within my target audience – lawyers and accountants.
In 2022 I stepped away from recruiting to focus on new endeavours, including going back to Uni to study my MBA. While at Uni, I gained valuable skills in digital marketing. This deepened my understanding of brand-building across various channels, including emerging platforms. I also came to appreciate the advantage that influencers held over their competitors.
During my study, it dawned on me that in the professional services arena, there was a noticeable gap in personal branding. Unlike industries such as beauty or retail, where influencer marketing thrives, professional services tend to shy away from this type of marketing. This seems like a missed opportunity, given professional services revolve around clients buying the time, expertise, and skills of a service provider rather than tangible products. Hence, it’s in this industry, more than any other, that personal branding is paramount. Customers seek to engage with professionals they know, trust, and like because they’re investing in a person’s capabilities, not just a product they can touch. This realization led to the birth of the “Personal Branding Unlocked” podcast.
I’m thrilled to embark on this journey, exploring personal branding for individuals in the realm of professional services.
